How to Make a Light Table for Kids

October 18, 2016~ Kids

Today I thought I’d share a super fun project that I tackled recently – how to make a light table for kids!  I’d seen light tables that were crazy expensive online and thought they looked like so much fun to experiment with colors, but we just couldn’t pay a few hundred dollars for one, so I decided to try to make one myself!  It turned out great and we’ve had a blast with it!

Light Table Play

To start with, I went digging in the basement for something that I could use as the box for our light table.  I wanted ours to be fairly small and portable so that we could use it on the floor or at a table and so that I could easily store it when we aren’t using it.  I ended up finding an old coffee table tray that was all scratched up.  Who knows why I kept it, but I’m sure glad I did!  The next step was to spray paint it a metallic silver inside and out so that the inside would help reflect light.

Once the box was painted and dry, I went hunting for lights and a topper for the box.  The top piece was a bit tricky, but through a lot of trial and error, I ended up with something that worked wonderfully!  I got a piece of plexiglass from Lowes for FREE.  I explained what I was attempting to do to a sales associate but told him that I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it because I didn’t know if my idea would even work!  He ended up finding me a scrap piece of plexiglass that he was able to cut to the size I needed!  Yay for free stuff!!

In order to make the top opaque, I experimented with different contact papers and even the window frosting sheets.  None of these got it opaque enough.  I finally found a frosted glass spray paint and sprayed both sides of the plexiglass several times to get a nice thick coat on both sides.  This worked like a charm!

I ordered lights that came in four strips from amazon and used electrical tape to secure them in place inside the box at an equal distance apart.  I chose these because they turn multiple colors and have a remote for turning them on and off since my lights would be inside the box.  I just made sure I put the receiver for the remote at the edge of the box so that the remote could connect to it.

The last step was to secure the top.  I wanted it to be secure enough that Noah couldn’t rip it off, but not so secure that I couldn’t get it off if the lights went bad.  I ended up just using Scotch double sided tape on the edges of the box and the pressed the plexiglass down really tight on top.

Here’s what the finished box looks like (and an adorable little boy who loves to play with it):

img_8488

We’ve since gotten a variety of fun objects to use on the light box.  Color paddles, color shapes, and even rock slices!  I love the color paddles because we can talk about mixing colors as well!  Noah’s had a great time with this and he loves pushing the buttons on the remote to change the color of the lights.  I’d love to get a set of Magnatiles for it too!  Maybe for Christmas.  🙂

I hope this inspires you to get creative with materials you have at home!  All said and done, this light box cost me $25 for the lights and about $7 for the frosted glass spray paint.  I already had the tray, tapes, and silver metallic spray paint.  So all in, I’m at $32!

Throw a Halloween Party

October 13, 2016~ Food, Kids, Lifestyle

Every year I throw a Halloween party where we invite our friends and their kiddos to join us for food and pumpkin carving. Over the years, this party has grown, but it’s so much fun! I’ve gone from owning almost no Halloween decorations to owning quite a lot! I recently decorated the house in preparation for our party, so I thought I’d share a peek and my tips for a great party!

For the mantle, I wanted an elegant display with a little bit of “spook” to it.  I went with a black and white theme to keep it clean and simple. It all started with the black and white leaves. I found those at Michael’s and the rest of the design evolved from there! To add something special to the vase and candles that I already had, I just cut pieces of black lace and used double sided tape to secure them.

For the dining room table, I used trees from Target’s dollar bin as my centerpiece. I added a black lace spider web table runner under the wooden box that is my centerpiece mainstay. To bring some of the same elements into my tablescape, I draped pieces of black lace over the plates. I then cut 2 pieces off of a spider web banner and used those with a little ghost in order to make the two end place settings a little different.

In terms of the actual party, here are a few tips to make it go off without a hitch!

First, plan and prep ahead! My party isn’t for two more weeks, but I’ve already got the decorations up. By using decorations that are elegant and simple, I don’t mind having them up for a while to enjoy before Halloween! I’ve got the menu planned out as well. It’s the same every year and I can make it ahead! Here’s the menu that I typically serve. Everything gets made the day before and all I have to do on the day of the party is reheat the soup in crockpots!

Pumpkin Fluff
Chili
Chicken Tortilla Soup
Cornbread (this is my favorite recipe!)
Meat, cheese, cracker tray (with everything cut up small enough for toddlers)
Fruit (again, cut up ahead of time to be small enough for toddlers)
Cupcakes

Second, plan entertainment for the kids so that the adults can enjoy each other (or at least try)! This year, I found some masks at Michael’s that the kids can color. I plan to set out the masks with washable crayons, construction paper with Halloween stickers, and my favorite books!

Third, offer pumpkin carving!  What would a party with kids be without a good mess?!  If the weather is nice, we’ll do this outside on kid tables.  If not, I’ve got plastic tablecloths that I can put down on the floor.  Our party is always BYOP – Bring Your Own Pumpkin!  I provide stickers for the kids to decorate their pumpkins with (hello Target dollar bin) as well as carving tools.  In the past, the kids have loved putting stickers all over their pumpkins and it keeps them busy!

Fine Motor Play using Straws

October 12, 2016~ Kids

This fine motor play activity using straws has been a favorite of Noah’s for over a year now.  It is so simple to put together.  You probably already have everything you need!

Fine motor play

Here’s what you need for this activity:

  • Parmesan cheese container (washed out, label removed)
  • straws (cut to fit)
  • craft pom poms
  • pipe cleaners (cut to fit)

This activity gives him great practice with fine motor skills, as he can push the straws and pipe cleaners through the holes in the lid of the container.  He can also open the bigger side of the container to push the pom poms through.  When we first started out with this activity, he was much younger, so we originally used only the straws.  As he’s gotten older, the pom poms and pipe cleaners have been a fun addition!  He’s now learned to unscrew the lid himself too!

And just so you know this is real life….  🙂

How to Make Nature Blocks

October 6, 2016~ Kids

We recently had a big storm come through our area and it knocked a pretty good sized tree branch down from our walnut tree in the front yard.  I decided this was the perfect opportunity to make nature blocks out of a branch that would otherwise be discarded!

img_8229-pure-white

This is such a simple project and Noah absolutely loves playing with these blocks! We have blocks of varying thicknesses and widths from using most of the branch.

img_8238-edited img_8237-post

It’s so much fun to watch Noah play with these.  He has a great imagination and we make everything from train tracks to construction sites out of them!  He loves to use his diggers and dump trucks to carry the “logs.” He also drives his trains over them. There are so many creative ways to use these!

img_8477-post
img_8473-ps-post

Here’s how you can make a set of your own.  First, find a branch (or even multiple branches from different types of trees would be great). Next, use a circular saw to cut different lengths.  Lightly sand any rough edges.  Then just spread out the blocks so that they have a chance to dry out.  Final step:  play! Really couldn’t be any easier!

img_8480-post

A few of ours did crack as they dried, so it may have been better to let the branch dry for a few weeks before we cut it, but I was too impatient for that.  🙂

We’ve had tons of fun with these blocks and perhaps the best part is that they were FREE!

How to Create a Stylish Coffee Bar

October 4, 2016~ Lifestyle

Today I’m going to walk you through how to create a stylish coffee bar!  We recently remodeled our house.  As part of that project, I wanted to make use of a nook in the kitchen that had no functional use as of yet.  I got the idea for a coffee bar after seeing so many cute pictures on Pinterest.  Being a coffee lover myself, I decided that was a perfect use of space!  I did, however, want it to be slightly more functional than just being a coffee bar.  It now functions as my coffee bar/blogging office and I love it!  There’s nothing like having a coffee machine right next to me to keep the blog posts coming!

img_5670-post-2048-px-new

Our contractor built the coffee bar so that it would exactly fit the space .  I wanted it to have some rustic, raw elements, but still look pretty.  To start, I drew out a sketch of what I envisioned.  I added metal rods in an “x” pattern on each end, both for a decorative element and to help stabilize the table.  The top is solid wood that we stained using a mix of two stains.  (Sunbleached by Rustoleum and Jacobean by Minwax).  We then put two layers of polyurethane on top to seal it from coffee stains!  The drawers are a custom height to fit my favorite coffee mugs.  Here’s a look at the coffee bar as it was being built:

before-1
before-2

To make this coffee bar function as a workspace for me as well, we drilled a hole in the back of one of the drawers to run power cords.  I store my blogging necessities in that drawer (laptop, phone charger, notebooks, pens, and my beloved planner).  The power cords run through the back of the drawer to a power strip mounted on the bottom of the coffee bar.  This hides the plugs from view (and from kids)!  The other drawer holds my coffee mugs, Nespresso coffee pods, and my mini whisks for whipping up amazing lattes!

img_5677-post-2048-px-new
img_5689-post-2048-px-new

Once the coffee bar was built and everything was dry, it was time to style it!  My favorite part!  I added a skinny shelf from The Container Store and a hanging bar from Ikea for mugs.  These adorable mugs are from Williams Sonoma.  When I saw the little espresso mugs with each of the boys’ initials, I had to have them!  Over time, I’ve switched out the pictures on the shelf, but I always make sure there is something there that speaks to me.  I love making my coffee first thing in the morning with a reminder of my mantra for each day.

Shorten the Morning Routine

September 14, 2014~ Lifestyle

I’m not a morning person.  Never have been.  My mom says that when I was a baby, I would stay up late at night watching Johnny Carson and sleep in until 9 am.  9 am is still my preferred wake up time.  I can’t remember the last time I got to sleep in until 9 am, but it’s still what I prefer.  Here are a few ways I’ve learned to shorten the morning routine and a few of my favorite products that have helped me do so.

  1. Shower and dry hair the night before.  This way, I can hand the baby off to my hubby and give myself some time to relax and wind down at the end of the day.  This does however mean that my fine hair is super flat and funky in the morning, so I use Alterna Caviar Dry Shampoo to perk it back up.  Works like a charm.
  2. Find easy, but put-together hairstyles and accessories.  I love a put together bun or a basic ponytail with a cute, dressy headband or hair tie.  My favorite all-day comfortable headbands are from Alter’d State.  For a messier look, I love Goodies Spin Pins.
  3. Set out your clothes for the week on Sunday night.  If there are any pieces that I need to steam (I hate irons, but I don’t mind the steamer), I do it on Sunday.  My outfits are then organized by day and ready to quickly pull off the hanger and put on in the morning.  If you really want to get organized about it, hang the coordinating jewelry in little jewelry bags with the outfit you plan on wearing it with.  I love White House Black Market jewelry and use the little bags they put the jewelry in when you buy it.
  4. Make ahead smoothies.  These are seriously my life saver in the mornings.  They give me energy and keep me full until lunch.  I got the smoothie base recipe here and my all-time favorite is the Pomegranate Blueberry!  Have fun with it and create your own combinations!

How do you get out the door on time in the mornings?

Sweet and Sour: Sleep or Lack Thereof

September 9, 2014~ Kids, Sweet and Sour

I’ve been sleep deprived for several months now and there are times that I don’t think I’ll ever sleep again.  There are of course nights that Noah is up several times during the night.  And then there are nights that even though he’s sleeping peacefully, I’ve found yet another thing to worry about.  (Is the swaddle blanket too loose so he will push it up around his face?  Is the swaddle blanket too tight so it’s forcing his arms and shoulders into an unnatural position that will harm his development?  Is he too hot?  Too cold?  Is he propped up enough that he can’t choke?  Is there any possible way a pacifier could suffocate him?)  You get the idea – irrational fears of a sleep deprived new mom that run through my mind as my baby boy is sleeping peacefully.

The past few nights, as sleep deprived as I am, I’ve taken a moment after Noah’s middle-of-the-night feeding to just snuggle and watch him.  He sleeps in my arms and these sweet little smiles spread across his face.  As I’ve seen a lot less of my little guy with him in daycare, these have become some of my favorite moments of the day – In the middle of the night, when I’m beyond tired myself.  I know that he won’t always fit so snuggly in my arms.  I know that he won’t always need to eat and cuddle in the middle of the night, when the whole house is quiet and it’s just me and him.  I know he may not always smile these big, open mouth smiles in his sleep.  I also know that even though it’s hard to be up during the night, and many days I feel like I just can’t do it anymore, when I see this sweet, smiling, sleeping baby, it melts my heart and makes my day.

I hope you find time to watch your sweet little ones smile today.  🙂

Documenting Baby’s Milestones

September 7, 2014~ Kids

Noah does at least one thing every day that I think is the cutest or smartest thing any baby in the entire world has ever done.  Proud momma here!  When I was pregnant with him, I bought a really cute baby book and started filling out the information about his parents, grandparents, puppy, etc.  And that’s as far as I got.  It sounded like such a great idea until I had a baby that constantly needed my attention.  Who knew I wouldn’t have time on maternity leave to spend drinking coffee and documenting baby’s milestones in a baby book!  Hmmm. (I’m sure all you non-first-time-mommas are laughing right now).

My mom gave me a baby calendar that has been such an easy way for me to quickly document what he’s doing each day!  I just leave it in the playroom (we spend a lot of time in there and it’s in a central area of the house) with a pen nearby.  As I walk past, I can quickly jot down something cute he did or a new skill that he mastered that day.  I’ve already had so much fun flipping back through the calendar reading about his many achievements thus far.  I know I will cherish this calendar forever!

baby calendar

Here are some of the things I typically jot down to get you started thinking about your own baby calendar!

  • Weight/height at doctor’s appointments
  • Family and friends that came to visit
  • Firsts (first smile, first laugh, first time rolling over, etc)
  • Toys Noah likes to play with
  • Objects Noah has become fascinated with (currently his hands and toes)
  • Noah’s likes and dislikes (he loves looking outside and he hates getting out of the bath)!
  • Things that made us laugh that day

What ideas do you have to share about how you keep track of the things you want to remember about your kids?

Sweet and Sour: Introduction

September 6, 2014~ Sweet and Sour

I think almost every morning when I get to work, my co workers and I start our day with stories about our little ones from the night before.  Sometimes we vent about how exhausted we are, how hard motherhood can be, or frustrating things our kids did.  Sometimes we laugh about cute things our little ones did or said.  Sometimes we share stories about things we’ve learned by reading various books or articles about developmental milestones our children should be reaching at different stages.  Mostly, we share stories and laughs in support of each other and I love that.

I decided to write a weekly post on the blog called Sweet and Sour.  I’ll soon be leaving my job to be a stay at home mom and I’ll really miss that time commiserating with other mothers.  Sweet and Sour will be a way for me to share my stories about the challenges of motherhood (the sour) but also the sweet.  I hope that we can support each other through these weekly posts!

You can find my Sweet and Sour posts under the “Sweet and Sour” category on the home page.  My hope is that you will be able to laugh and cry along with me – and maybe even find some mommy inspiration to keep you going.  I hope you enjoy them! 🙂

How to Stick to a Grocery Budget

September 4, 2014~ Lifestyle

Cooking is something that I love to do and I’ve always felt like cooking is a way that I can care for my family.  One of my favorite decorations in my kitchen is a little sign that says, “Cooking is love made visible.”  That’s exactly how I feel about cooking, but it can be difficult to learn how to stick to a grocery budget and still have fun experimenting in the kitchen!

cooking-is-love-made-visible

When we made the decision for me to stay home, creating and sticking to a grocery budget became something that I’ve really focused on.  I’ll admit that it does take some time, but the payoff is well worth it.  We used to easily spend $150 or more weekly on groceries.  With these tips I’ve been able to cut our average weekly grocery bill down to $50-$75!

  1. Check the weekly store ads.  I have 4 different stores that I check for ads each week.  I then choose which store to go to based on the number of sales they have that match the items I would typically buy.  The one pitfall to avoid with this is making sure that you don’t buy things you don’t need or typically eat just because they are on a great sale!  As you’ll see in tip #5, stick to your list!
  2. Start tracking the lowest price you’ve paid (or seen) for an item.  For example, I made a list of the basic types of meat that I typically buy (chicken breast, chicken thighs, ground turkey, ground beef, pork loin, pork chops, etc) and each time I went to the store, I wrote down what I paid that week.  I also checked ads for the stores that I wasn’t going to.  Over the course of a few weeks, I started seeing the lowest price I had paid or seen in an ad.  That tells me what my target price is each time I buy that item.  If that type of meat is above my target price, I don’t buy it again until it’s back at the target price.  When it reaches the price I’m willing to pay, I stock up and freeze it.  I then chose which store I would shop at that weekend based on the most number of sales for things I was needing to buy.  Once in a while if there was a great deal at another store, I would make a special stop at that store.
  3. Shop farmer’s markets.  I absolutely love going to the farmer’s market in the summer!  It’s a fun family outing, gets us outside, and I like buying local.  Just be sure you know the average price of an item at the grocery store before you go, as farmer’s markets aren’t always cheaper.  One of my favorite recipes to make with my finds at the farmer’s market is this wonderful BLT Panzanella Salad from Cooking Light.  I also love to stock up when prices are good at the farmer’s market and spend a day in the summer canning/freezing.  Here are a few of my favorite recipes:
    • My Grandma Ruth’s Freezer Sweet Corn
    • Pioneer Woman’s strawberry jam
    • Plum sauce
    • Peach BBQ sauce
  4. Grow your own!  I know this takes a bit more work, but you really can save a ton of money just buy growing your own herbs.  I love cooking with fresh herbs, but they are really pricey at the store and don’t last long in the fridge.  Grow your tomatoes with your basil for better tasting tomatoes.  Here’s what I grow every summer:
    • Basil (I love to buy the gallon pots of basil in May when they come in at Whole Foods – they take off quickly and grow into big, beautiful bunches of basil!).
    • Tomatoes (like I said, I always plant my tomatoes and basil together).
    • Chives
    • Thyme
    • Sage
    • Rosemary (I plant my rosemary in a separate pot as it’s not the friendliest herb from what I’ve read)
    • Mint (I also plant my mint in a separate pot so that it doesn’t take over my entire garden)garden
  5. Organize your shopping list by area of the store and don’t stray from the list.  This helps me get in and out of the store quickly with no distractions.  I organize my list into the following sections:
    • Canned goods (anything non-refrigerated)
    • Produce
    • Meat
    • Dairy/Refrigerated
    • Frozen
